In 2026, the spring equinox, also known as the vernal equinox, will take place on March 20, at 7:46 a.m. Eastern time. The word equinox comes from two Latin words meaning equal and night. That’s because on the equinox, day and night last almost the same amount of time — though one may get a few extra minutes.

Spring begins Friday and although temperatures have been giving Portland a nice preview, a slow-moving cold front is on its way that will bring some rain, and cooling temps. The National Weather Service says the front will linger along the coast much of Friday but then move inland bringing showers by the late afternoon and into the evening.
